WHAT DOES NEWTECNIC DO?
We are a disruptive innovator. We have revolutionized the process of designing buildings. As a result, we design buildings which are different, and more valuable, than those generated with any comparable budget that use the traditional method. In short, our buildings are better designed and more valuable to our clients.
HOW DOES NEWTECNIC YOU ACHIEVE THIS?
We are engineers and architects who link design directly to construction.
WHY DOES NEWTECNIC DO THIS?
To make high quality design faster to design, cheaper to design, faster to build and cheaper to build.
HOW DID NEWTECNIC BUILD THE FIRM?
Newtecnic started as architects and engineers who focused on facades. We found that our clients who were architects sought to be engineers as well as architects, so they worked with engineers instead of doing the engineering themselves. As a development of our facade design and engineering work, we decided to work as engineers and architects across entire projects. The two mindsets of engineering and architecture can coexist very happily and can be brought together successfully when a balance of an engineering approach (that of assemblies) and an architectural approach (that of spaces) is required for a large scale project where budget really matters.
HOW DO THESE TWO DIFFERENT WAYS OF VIEWING THE WORLD COME TOGETHER?
Through prototyping, modularization and getting the building, or building complex, to do a ‘job’; to achieve its purpose. The resulting visual excitement in our designs comes along for free as a benefit.
HOW BIG ARE NEWTECNIC DESIGN TEAMS?
The work at Newtecnic is undertaken by small specialised teams of architects and engineers, with a maximum of four members per task. The production of drawings is automated. The client pays for design decisions which add value; not outputs. Outputs are simply a way of setting out all the decisions made in the ready-to-build 3D model.
HOW DOES NEWTECNIC START A PROJECT?
In anticipation of the start of a new project, we undertake three months of research and development activities before the project starts. This work is done entirely at Newtecnic’s own risk and expense. We undertake this research and development on the basis of the art of building construction as practised in architectural composition, engineering design and the execution of complex projects.
WHY DOES NEWTECNIC DO RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WORK?
R+D work is preparation, in order to understand the project as well as to generate useful research outputs such as new facade systems. Since Newtecnic funds this work, we accept only limited numbers of new projects, due to the high potential risk involved for a company. The R&D and prototyping is a key component in this new way of designing buildings.
WHAT STIMULATES YOUR THINKING AT NEWTECNIC?
Experimentation is important part of our work. We have three types of experimentation:
- Trying new experiences in processes and delivery
- Taking things apart
- Making prototypes
WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS DOES NEWTECNIC WORK ON?
Newtecnic only takes on projects that have a specific engineering design challenge. Straightforward designs, that use the solutions of other designs previous designs, is not what we do.
WHAT IS NEWTECNIC’S WORKING METHOD?
We use our platform to develop projects, with outputs shared instantly via our own interface. File sharing sites suit the traditional method of providing fixed updates, based on a date and revision number. The development of a project can be traced only over weeks and months, not hours or days. The method of using file sharing sites is a slow, heavily documented process. This method also slows down design development, as every update needs to be described, compared and justified in relation to its predecessor. Our interface is much more immediate: Ideas from the design team and from the client can be tried out immediately using the Newtecnic platform.
WHICH TOOLS DO NEWTECNIC USE?
The use of scripts added to regular economic tools for analysis and design is the key to sharing outputs with our clients. We use the Newtecnic platform to communicate and develop the project with the client. We produce all the outputs as would be expected on any project, but with much more resolution of design, much more complete information, and at a much lower price. This is achieved by not using the documentation-driven methods of the laborious software-based working methods of inputting data and outputting drawings.
AS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY COMPANY, HOW DOES NEWTECNIC CATEGORISE YOUR OUTPUTS?
We categorise by ‘design concept’ or ‘engineering component’ rather than by ‘technical component’ even though we write technical books. However, because we write and constantly update our series of books on building construction, our outputs are highly technical but answer the questions set by the client. All outputs are a series of answers to questions, and not just pictures accompanied by the words of a generic specification. Our categories divide design into groups that reflect the design process rather than an old-fashioned idea of the building process. When our work is complete, our design outputs are ready for use in the preparation of shop drawings. We do not require the contractor to complete the design for Newtecnic.
WHAT DO CLIENTS WANT FROM NEWTECNIC?
Our guidance and platform, substantiated with outputs.
WHAT DOES NEWTECNIC WANT FROM CLIENTS?
Your ideas; your journey which we want to join and make a success.
HOW DO NEWTECNIC CATEGORISE OUR INTERDISCIPLINARY WORK AND OUTPUTS?
Into client-focused sections that reflect user requirements, not simply meeting the expectations of standard specifications and standard drawings.
HOW ARE NEWTECNIC ABLE TO ACHIEVE THIS?
By continuously updating our textbooks and professional handbooks, that are used by students, architects and engineers around the world. We maintain our position as lead innovators from R+D outputs generated with these textbooks.
HOW DO NEWTECNIC REMAIN FOCUSED AND ENGAGED IN THE PROCESS?
By continuously interacting with a client through our platform, our full range of architectural and engineering design outputs to which only the client and Newtecnic have access.
WHAT ARE THE CATEGORIES?
Site, program, structure, entry, circulation, enclosure. These categories also correspond to traditional design documentation categories of procurement, architecture, structure, MEP, interior design, and external envelope.
