Heydar Aliyev Airport

Location: Baku, Azerbaijan
Date: 2009

Comments:
Two options were prepared for a new external envelope to the existing airport building in Baku. One option is based on the use of hexagonal panels which are formed from triangular panels, providing an envelope of complex form from a small number of panel types. Internal spaces are covered by space frames formed in the same geometry. The space frame roof is supported by structural cone-like forms which are partially glazed.

The second option uses a more fluid geometry, using structural shells forming areas of opaque roof to create a set of linked enclosures. The gaps between enclosures are glazed, either to identify circulation zones or to admit daylight through vertical glass screens.
